Wow! I'm always looking for unique, one-of-a-kind stays and this one made for a stunning experience. Kind owner, gorgeous views, fresh mountain air mixed with the scent of tatami, super spacious interior that made me feel right at home. If you're looking for a sterile, bland apartment rental, perhaps this isn't for you, but if you want something different, something authentic, you'll love it. My favourite stay on my Kyushu trip!

Very cool place.. All the required items and facilities. Great "vibe". We only stopped over for the night so we were not able to make good use of the location.

Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto...
Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto Airport and is easy to reach in a rental car. The scenery en route is amazing! The Gorge is stunning but not very long. The rowing boat trip is relatively expensive, ¥5100 for 30 minutes for a max of 3 people, but it is great fun with wonderful photo opportunities! You can walk some of the way along the river but part of the path is still damaged. There are several nice shrines in the area, one of which does nightly Kagura dance performances (1 hour for ¥1000). We stayed 2 nights in a lovely Ryokan at the end of our holiday and it was a great way to finiour trip to Japan.

Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place!
Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place! The gorge was one of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life and I will definitely be returning one day with my family. I cannot recommend this place enough.
The locals were so friendly! Literally everyone I spoke to was so kind and helpful, when I panicked and got myself lost they were so wonderful. Even kids walking home from school said hi as they passed me!
The only catch is that if you’re flying into Kumamoto Airport, there is only one bus that will take you to Takachiho and it’s over two hours to travel and only comes twice a day. You have to be very organised because if you miss that bus, it’s not easy to get there if you aren’t renting a car.
While you’re in the area, you should also check out Iwato Shrine and the Amaterasu Railway. The railway is a great way to get a better view of the valley from above -so long as you have a head for heights!
Overall, I would say seeing Takachiho is a must if you’re visiting Japan!

Highly recommending the nature trail walk from Manai falls to Takachiho Shrine. It offers better view than boating ard the waterfall. If time allows, do go to Amanoiwato Shrine - the view at Amano Yasukawara is awesome. If you eat beef, lunch at Nagomi is one of the best option!

A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature.
A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature. I really enjoyed the shrine and getting some omamori as gifts. The gorge was beautiful, but unfortunately the water was a little muddy when we went, and we couldn't ride the row boats due to high tide. Despite this, it was a great stay and I would want to come back to see it during Autumn season as I heard its really beautiful.
We came to Takachiho to visit the famous gorge and when looking at accommodation, there were little around. Ryokan Shinsen was definitely more on the pricer side, however having stayed the 2 nights, I would be more than keen to stay here again. The facilities and rooms were immaculate. The service was excellent, very attentive. Breakfast and dinner were included in the stay and it's definitely an experience. There is plenty of parking if you're planning on driving and close to tourist attractions.
The breakfast was quaint and cozy. It's just toast and tea/coffee, but the jam, butter and honey combo were amazing. Also there are boiled eggs.
Our room had its own bathroom and we loved it. Very comfortable stay.
Location was perfect. We walked to the shrine to watch the yagura performance like 5 minutes away walking. Then we went to the gorge the next day, which was just a couple minute drive.
The view from the room was beautiful!

Great place to stay in Takachiho. We arrived much later than anticipated due to the roads to Takachiho, but the owner went out of her way so we would be able to check in and get to shower and eat before the doors closed down.
The place has multiple restaurants and bars around, and a gas station. Convenience stores are pretty far, so don't count on those unless you are willing to drive for a few minutes.
Five star traditional Japanese breakfast, which was amazing! This was followed by a five star traditional Japanese dinner, which was even more amazing! The staff was exceptional, always attentive to the needs of my 90 y/o mother. The facility was beautiful and peaceful, with very tasteful art and gardens.
The room was spacious, the bed comfortable, the heater worked well and they let me check-in early which was very nice. I really liked the room. The location is also very close to Iwato Shrine, a small supermarket and the bus stop to go to Takachiho.
Absolutely massive private tatami room. Free parking, and in a pretty good location. We left our car at the hostel, easy walking distance to restaurants. Maybe 20ish minutes to the Takachiho Shrine, and another 10-15 to get down to the gorge.
The western style beds are very comfortable. Both the breakfast and dinner menu were excellent. They vary the menu everyday as we stayed there for 3 nights.
Very close to the Takachiho shrine.
This hotel is clean, modern and comfortable, a rare find in Takachiho. Room is compact but well designed. Like the separation of shower and toilet. Highly recommended if you visit the gorge.
It was a nice place to sleep after a visit to the Takachiho area. The staff were super kind and cute and answered all of our questions. The room was small but clean.
High privacy as there are only 8 units in the resort. Extremely luxurious room and the Kaiseki dinner is one of the best. The Takachiho steak was the highlight.
A lovely quiet hotel close to Takachiho Gorge and Takachiho Shrine.
Excellent and very helpful staff who were very patient with us non Japanese speakers.
Everything is nice, staffs, cleanliness, service and the excellent breakfast!! The location is convenient to visit Takachiho Gorge and historical shrines.
