Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
・For Japanese standards - room was relatively big
・Comfortable bed with two different pillows
・Equipment seemed new, room was clean
・Eco cleanup (by default room cleaned once per 3 days)
・Location convenient for sightseeing - close to Kumamoto Castle; tram station, bus terminal and many shops & restaurants nearby
・Self check-out / check-in in the machine
・Big tv, table with two chairs
A "classic" hotel, not brand new but well kept and maintained.
Spacious room, with a view of the Kumamoto castle.
Great bathroom, with a large bathtub.
The staff is stylish, welcoming and helpful.
Great breakfast, with a choice of Japanese or Western.
Location couldn't be better. We left the car at the hotel parking and walked to the places we wanted to see.
A relaxing stay.
The hotel is just next to a very big shopping arcade, with a lot of restaurants and shops. So you will definately find something you like to eat or shop. But even you are full in the action, you will have a good and quiet sleep (especially after the onsen 😄). The Kumamoto castle is is short walking distance and the street car station is also nearby.
breakfast is one of the two choices. Compared to other hotels on the same trip, breakfast isn't as good as others.... location is very very good. right next to Kumamoto castle and shopping street. no need to drive for visiting those places. a bit troublesome is carpark spaces are limited and no on sen in hotel. but overall, very nice one~
Okus Hotel was located in a leafy part of the inner city, within walking distance of the castle. Additionally, shopping and restaurants were plentiful and easily found nearby. The hotel staff, conveniently for us, spoke excellent English and provided helpful and willing assistance. Our room was spacious, although not contemporary.
Great location & price.. wonderful staff. Clean, cozy and comfortable room. The view from the top floor (open terrace) was great. I like the location- short walking distance to Kumamoto castle, shopping area and 20 min tram ride to Kumamoto station. I would recommend for everyone and I would love to come back.
The hotel is very near to kumamoto castle and in a shopping district. Plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy. Parking is possible next to the hotel. The hotel has a large public bath available. The rooms are very spacious and each have a separate shower area and toilet.
Basic, no-frills hostel, clean & quiet | close to Kumamoto station and Kumamoto Castle | basic kitchen, coffee/tea provided | warm shower, towel provided | bunks have privacy curtain | small lockers for valuable items | good WiFi | payment is yen only upon check-in |
The hotel was in a convenient location, very close to shopping, a variety of restaurants and Kumamoto Castle. The breakfast wasn’t bad and they offered a blend of western and Japanese food. Not a huge selection but the eggs were real. Morning wasn’t bad either.
Modern, clean line lobby. Comfortable room and great onsen with a view of the city. Breakfast is plenty with Asian and western dishes. Walking distance to the Kumamoto Castle and lots of eateries close by.
The hotel is close to a street gallery with several shops and restaurants, and close to Kumamoto Castle, so it is a great place for you to stay if you are a tourist. The room was comfortable and clean.
Great location, especially if you’re there to see the castle area. Staff were super-friendly. Room was large (especially by Japanese standards), clean and very comfortable. On-site parking available.
Great location - we could easily walk to the castle and it was very near to buses and trams. The apartment is spacious, with a comfy couch, so it was nice for hanging out in after a long day.
Good location with less than 10 min walk to the shopping street and able to walk to Kumamoto castle.
